Creating A Workstation/Server Image With Symatec Ghost:
Windows 2000

A. Create a Ghost boot disk:
  1. Create a network boot disk for the client using Symantec's "Ghost Boot Wizard" by going to the Start.. Programs.. Symantec Ghost.. Ghost Boot Wizard.
  2. Highlight Network Boot Disk from the menu, and select Next >.
  3. Highlight the network driver for the host that will be backed up from the available driver list, and select Next >.(Note: The driver information for your windows client can be found by going to Start.. Settings.. Control Panel.. System.. Hardware tab.. Device Manager.. maximize (by clicking on the + sign next to) Network Adapter, which should list the appropriate driver name)
  4. Make sure that Symantec Ghost is selected and the path for your ghost.exe file is listed in the Ghost.exe portion of the Program Location. If it is not use the Browse button to the right of the Ghost.exe file to find it .( the ghost.exe is commonly found in C:\Program Files\Symantec\Ghost\ghost.exe) Once all of the appropriate fields have been selected and filled out select Next>.
  5. Verify that DHCP will assign the IP settings. If it is not selected do so, and select Next>.
  6. Insert a blank floppy disk in the floppy drive, select Format disk(s) first, Quick Format, and select Next>.
  7. At the Format screen (leave all configurations as they are)select Start.
  8. At the Warning: screen select Ok.
  9. When prompted with "Format Complete." select Ok.
  10. Close Format A:\ window by selecting Close.
  11. Wait for the boot disk creation process to conclude....
  12. Once boot disk has been created select Finish, and remove the newly created boot disk.
B. Creating the Workstation/Server image
  1. Place the network boot disk in the workstation/server to be backed up, and power cycle it. (reboot)
  2. Symantec 7.0 will initiate.
  3. Select the proper boot partition (Lentel Reborn Multi-boot menu.)
  4. Symantec 7.0 will initiate, then Select OK.
  5. Select Multicasting
  6. Go to stage C (below)..
  7. On the workstation/client using the Symantec ghost boot disk, enter the session name previously defined (e.g., foo) on the workstation/server receiving the image.
  8. Once the session name has been entered select OK.
  9. Select Ok again at the following screen.
  10. When prompted for image compression select No
  11. Wait for the image file to be transfered, once transfered remove the floppy disk and restart the workstation/server.
  12. Go to section C. number 7.
C. Seting up the Workstaton/Server that is to receive the image
  1. On the workstation/server where the image is being placed go to Start.. Programs.. Symantec Ghost.. Multicast Server
  2. Create a Session Name (E.g., foo).
  3. Select Dump From Client.
  4. Specify a location and a name for the image to be placed, using the Browse button to the right of the Image File.
  5. Select Accept Clients
  6. Go to stage B. number 5. and continue following the instruction for that stage.
  7. Once Ghost has notified you of the file image transfers completion select Ok to close the prompt, and verify that the image has been placed in the correct location (as previously specified).
D. Restoring a Workstation/Server with a Symantec Ghost image
  1. Move to the workstation/server containing the image do the following:
  2. On the workstation/server where the image is being placed go to Start.. Programs.. Symantec Ghost.. Multicast Server
  3. Create a Session Name (E.g., foo).
  4. Select Load To Client.
  5. Using the Browse button select the image to be used in order to restore the intended workstation/server.
  6. SelectAccept Clients
  7. On the workstation/server to be recovered do the following:
  8. Place the network boot disk in the workstation/server to be restored, and power cycle it. (reboot)
  9. Select the appropriate boot partition at the Lenten Reborn Card boot selection menu.
  10. Select OK.
  11. Select Multicasting
  12. Enter the Session Name used on the workstation/server containing the image (e.g., foo).
  13. When prompted to load disk Select yes.
  14. Select OK.
  15. When prompted to load disk Select yes.
  16. Go back to the workstation/server containing the image and select Send (located below the Accept Clients button previously used in the Ghost Multicast Server interface)
  17. Once the image transfer has been completed restart the workstation that has just been recovered, and close Symantec ghost on the workstation/server containing the ghost image file.
